OMG – What’s in Your Label?

Enjoy this new perspective...

This past spring, I was asked to present on eating disorders at a personal trainer conference. This it what I discovered from it!

An eating disorder can start with thoughts before it gets serious (perhaps ten years in the works). Sadly young people die from it.

Innocently, words are spoken without thinking about the consequences. For example, a father comments about slim women in front of his young daughter. She wants to please him. When the daughter gains weight, she is very distraught. Her road to an eating disorder can begin here.

Fortunately, not every child or teenager will follow this road but the focus and worry around eating properly and looking good is still a growing concern. More than ever today because of the focus on health and nutrition due to the increase cases of obesity and disease. Is this focus good?

NOW, let’s be present. I understand that more and more people are finding out certain things about foods perhaps very unpleasant unhealthy things. Like milk is not milk anymore but pus in a bag. Or that cooking food cooks you. OR it might be that you are buying into some of the trends. Cleansing and detoxing perhaps! Food supplements are a way to offset your poor diet? Take this juice and voila you are healthier. A lot of info is circulating, and all this info can be confusing because even the experts cannot agree. The wellness industry is growing leaps and bounds to the point where the financial guys call it the next billion dollar industry. Confusing most and drawing people into many ways of eating.

What I hear often is “I am a vegetarian (but I eat fish once a month).” “I am a raw foodist (but I eat 10% cooked food in the winter).” “I am a vegan.” “I am this.” “I am that.” Who cares? Eat, laugh and be merry! One will surely find their way.

Many are categorizing themselves into a group. I believe this is creating a hierarchy of what way of eating is better than another. It is causing people to judge others for their choices. Amateurs!

I also notice how stressed out people are getting over trying to become this or that way. I also see that some people cannot socialize with others due to their food preferences. Heaven mercy someone eats meat in front of them! It makes them sick thinking about it. Is this a good thing?

When ask the question how do you eat? consider answering not with a label or name but with something else. I EAT WHOLESOME NATURAL FOOD. Answer how you like! Answer the truth! And if you have that little cheese then you haven't labeled yourself and you are not feeling like you lied.

I like to eat raw natural whole organic foods. One raw whole food supplement I consume is seal oil and you should see the energy change when I say this to some vegans. Honestly, I do not judge you for what you eat! If someone eats spiders, good for them.

Almost immediately, I can feel them get hung up on the seal and judging it. Is this good? I don’t believe so. Any feeling that is negative is stressful. You should be in a place to accept what you eat and not to judge the way for which others eat. We already have politics and religion separating people.

Daniel Vitalis educates on this! He has inspired me to share my own thoughts.

After all, there is now another eating disease (orthorexic vs anorexic) when a person continues to dwindle down their food choices so that they have very little to eat. How about closet eaters? When one says they are vegan but boy oh boy a little bit of cheese tastes soooo good. Are they cheating? Are they bad? Are they now not a vegan? Who cares…not me. Start your journey. Raw food is grand. Relax and enjoy!!

My friend Natashia and I discussed this recently and she decided to write a blog about it too. http://technorati.com/lifestyle/article/labels-why-does-choosing-a-lifestyle1/

  1. Great post and very well said.
The label shouldn't matter, what works for one doesn't always work for another.
Be present and learn what works best for you, that is what is important!!

    Thanks
